Why my skin look tired?
As we age, our skin is constantly being exposed to a wide range of external irritants, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun, air pollution, and smoke, harsh weather and external stress. Many skin problems are caused by or are associated with an excessive build-up of dead skin cells that makes the skin thick and dull, and may cause clogged pores.
What actually happens with the skin?
Older, photo-aged skin has slower cell maturation and increased adhesion compared to younger skin. The result is a thickening of the outer layer (stratum corneum), which has impaired barrier function, with poor light reflection, resulting in dullness or sallow (yellow-grey) complexion. Water escapes more easily, resulting in dehydration. This damaged epidermal barrier allows increased irritant penetration, resulting in skin sensitivity and erythema (redness). Pigmentary changes also occur. Collagen is degraded by photo-aging, resulting in the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. In advanced photo-aging, damaged elastin is evidenced in coarse wrinkling, sallow discolouration and skin thickening. Abnormal dilation of blood vessels also commonly results in reddening of the skin.
How glycolic peels can help?
Regular exfoliation with chemical skin peels, combined with medical grade daily home skin products, improves overall skin function, and effectively treats photo-aged skin. Also referred to as superficial skin resurfacing treatments, chemical skin peels safely remove the outer skin layers diminishing pigmentation irregularities.
How glycolic peels are applied?
Glycolic Peel treatment also known as Sugar Cane Peel (as it is extracted from raw cane sugar) is a specific technique for skin renewal. The treatment is mainly designed to give one a fresh and youthful appearance and tackle different skin discolourations . Leading dermatologists and plastic surgeons have long appreciated the positive results of this treatment which is ideal for treating and reducing skin sun damage, fine lines, dull skin tone, enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation including age spots. The areas treated are face, neck, top of the back, decollete and back of the arms. The treatment is carried out by medical practitioners only.
The skin is tested prior to the first treatment. The procedure lasts for 15-20 min and consists of three stages. 1st stage - application of various strengths of Glycolic Peel starting from 2 min with 20% and gradually increasing to 5 min with 70% within a course of 6-8 weekly treatments. The initial course is usually followed by a personal programme of monthly maintenance.
Do I need to take time off?
Glycolic Peel is superficial and therefore the patient does not look dramatically different after the procedure. You may have some light redness and puffiness for 1/2 an hour afterwards. Usually people look like they have just had a nice facial treatment or have been in a sauna. There is no skin peeling, blistering or stinging. Slight flaking of the skin may though occur after 50% and 70% acid application.
When will I see the result?
Glycolic Peel is a gold base because it allows, although superficial, deep skin exfoliation. Some results may be seen after first treatment and obvious change in the skin quality and appearance will be observed at the end of the course.
Will glycolic peels help Melasma?
Glycolic Peels are found to be very effective in treatment of Melasma. Melasma, also known as Cholasma, is a common condition more often found in women than in men. Although it has been known to affect women of all skin tones, those with darker tones (Indians, Hispanics, Middle-Easterners, and North Africans) are more susceptible to this condition while 10% of the cases involve dark skinned men. Melasma is characterised by irregular tan or brown patches of dark skin on the face or more specifically on the cheeks, upper lip, nose, forehead, jawline and in rare occasions the forearms. We see lovely result in our clinics. The course of at least 4-6 treatments is needed to see this condition improvement.
How many treatments would I need?
Amount of treatments varies and depends on extend of the lesions, their darkness and your skin sensitivity. In general, we see some positive reaction to our therapy after 4-6 application and medical grade home care cream.
Do I have to use home care cream?
We advise on implementing medical grade home care cream into the peeling course as it helps helps further reduction of pigment spots, regulates pigment production, harmonises complexion and evens skin tone. It consists of cocktail of 9 highly concentrated active ingredients: Kojic, Salicylic, Phytic and Mandelic acids, Arbutin, Niacinamide, Retinol and Licorice Extract.
Result of Glycolic Peel can be enhanced by Ultrasonic DEEP SKIN Exfoliation
This combines the luxuries of a chemical peel in conjunction with advanced Exfoliation and therapeutic facial ultrasound deep skin treatment which involves a tree-step process; first Ultrasound buffs away the dull outer layer, second a Glycolic application is immediately applied to absorb deeper into the dermis, third an Ultrasound massage that achieves deep penetration and absorption of topical moisturiser. The ultrasound treatment rejuvenates and defends against the aging process by reducing lines and softening wrinkles. This routine is highly advisable to people who suffer from Melasma.
Glycolic Peels also can be combined with PRP therapy.
The platelets can stimulate proliferation or fibroblast, epidermal cells, and collagen synthesis. In addition, the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-B) has been proven to inhibit melanogenesis - reverse skin pigmentation - the exact opposite effect of exposure to UV-B radiation.
Once again, we would like to stress that Melasma is known to occur even after successful treatments. So you must take precautions against it by using sufficient sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and at least 30+ SPF. Avoiding skin care products that are harsh and aggravate Melasma is also recommended.
