How does Dermapen® work?

Dermapen® offers a variety of effective skin treatments. The device provides unparalleled collagen induction by fractionally piercing the epidermis and dermis with microneedles. These tiny injuries mobilise the body's innate ability to re-grow and repair skin through the physiology of collagen induction. Dermapen® is safer. Due to the adjustable depth of its needles and its unique vertical microneedling technology, Dermapen® is also more effective and less traumatic than traditional skin microneedling rollers. The cocktail of vitamins delivered into the skin via this method absorbs quicker, with less pain and shorter downtime after the treatment. We offer Microneedling and Nano-needling.

What does this involve?

The mechanism of injury has a long history in aesthetic therapy and invokes natural and holistic processes in the skin. These process consist of the four main phases of tissue regrowth - the skin's physiological healing in response to a wound. The first stage is the inflammatory response to the initial injury, lasting 1-3 days. During this stage, the chemotaxis response occurs and leads to the proliferation of fibroblasts. The body’s platelets begin to build a wound matrix. This leads to cell migration to remove debris and bacteria, and stimulate the second healing phase: proliferative phase. During this time (3-5 days), the new fibroblasts, monocytes, keratinocytes created during the previous phase continue to proliferate and multiply. New collagen is formed in the wound matrix. The third stage is the fibrotic response (5-20 days), during which growth factors are released and the formation of new skin accelerates. Finally, the maturation stage of new healthy skin occurs from day 28: the skin’s vascular matrix matures, causing skin to tighten.

The above process take place in the deep layers of the skin; the upper layers remain virtually undamaged. Moreover, the process does not involve heat or thermal energy, nor harsh chemicals. The upper layer of the skin, therefore, heals quickly. Following the treatment, you can get on with your day-to-day activities after just 2 days of downtime; or after one day with the help of light touch foundation.

What is the difference between Micro and Nano-needling?

Main difference between the two is the depth of needle penetration, needles thickness and their amount on the treatment head.
Nano-needling penetrates only the top layer of the skin (epidermis) while micro-needling penetrates into the deep dermis

Which skin conditions will microneedling help?

The Dermapen® treatment can provide drastic results in improving the appearances of acne scars. Micro needles of the Dermapen® create new collagen and elastin. This is called collagenesis. New vascular structure develops following the controllable damage that occurs during this therapy. The growth of new capillaries in turn improves blood supply to the treated area.  This helps nourish existing skin while providing a healthy foundation for new skin. The mechanical process of microneedling breaks up fibrosis and uneven scar tissue, and stimulates the growth of new cells. In comparison to other scarring therapies, the Dermapen® keeps the integrity of the epidermis fully intact.  This quickens healing time and causes less pain.

The challenge of treating surgical scars lies in the matrix of the damaged tissue, which is dense and therefore difficult to penetrate. Because of this, many scar therapies delivered limited results. The Dermapen's unique vertical stamping method and precise depth control (up to 2.5mm) make this a superior method to everything that had come before. Thanks to the use of surgical steel in the Dermapen's design, the devise has exceptional structural integrity and robustness. Furthermore, the design of the automated needle tip is unique: a total of 11 tiny needles working in unison. These qualities allow this medical tool to penetrate difficult scar tissue, leading to dramatic improvements in the appearance, texture, elasticity, size and mobility of the scarred skin.

Various treatments are available for the purpose of improving the appearance of existing stretch marks, including laser treatments, dermabrasion, and prescription retinoids. Some cream manufacturers claim recent stretch marks can be reduced with creams; however, few studies exist to support these claims. Unlike these other methods, Dermapen® therapy uses a body's natural resource to treat unsightly stretch marks through a process of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). The Dermapen® device allows to adjust the needle depth appropriately, in order to activate a cascade of fresh fibroblast. This generates new skin cells, collagen and elastin for smooth and healthy coloured skin. The deep layer of the skin effectively thickens, leading to noticeably smoother and more even appearance of stretch marks.

Most patients see a noticeable difference in just one treatment, however 3-6 treatments may be necessary depending on the extent of skin damage.

The method of vertical stamping employed by the Dermapen® device is the fastest and easiest way to promote the growth of new skin. It is type of Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), but other types that fall within this family are not as effective.

The process of controlled skin trauma delivered by Dermapen can deliver fantastic results on its own. However, to ensure an even better result, it is possible to combine Dermapen treatment with Hyaluronic acid and a complexion-brightening vitamin complex. These additional elements further nourish and hydrate the skin, catalysing the natural processes that would otherwise take a little longer to develop.

The combination if these treatments is known as facial mesotherapy. After having it, our patients commonly describe their skin as looking rested, hydrated, glowing and firm.

Dermapen and facial mesotherapy can be used as a supplement, or an alternative, to many non-microneedling anti-aging regimes, such as botox, IPL rejuvenation, Dracula PRP, peels, antioxidants and topical creams.

Why do I need more than one dermapen treatment?

Skin conditions are different from patient to patient. The patient's age also plays a role in determine the number of treatments they would need to see the results they desire. Typically, the more sever conditions, such as extensive acne scarring, can require 3-5 deep Dermapen treatments to provide a significant improvement. General skin rejuvination for unproblematic skin usually requires 2-3 treatments.

What are the risks?

There is a very small chance of bruising that can be easily covered with make-up.

What will the treatment do for me?

The basic Dermapen treatment delivers general skin rejuvenation for tired and/or polluted skin, helps minimise the size of pores, and tightens the skin. Combining the Dermapen with Hyaluronic acid and vitamins transforms the treatment into a bio-revitalising procedure. Injecting the acid and other nutrients into the dermis produces a quicker visible improvement in the tone, hydration, pores size and texture of your skin.

Is the result immediate?

You will notice some improvement of your skin a few days after first treatment. However, at least three treatments (4 weeks apart) may be required for you to see a significant difference depending on your age and the nature of your skin. Although the result is long lasting, maintenance treatments are recommended once every four month.

Is the microneedling treatment painful?

Our practitioner will apply topical anaesthetic cream to your face prior to the treatment. This minimises any discomfort during the procedure. Nano-needling treatment is pain free.

Do I need a consultation?

You do not need to book a separate consultation for the Dermapen or Mesotherapy treatment, but could have one if you wish to. In this case, the treatment will not be done on the same visit. You will not be hustled or pushed into buying anything at your first consultation. Its purpose is for our practitioner to provide necessary knowledge and enhance your understanding of the treatment and the technology we use.

We do not treat children under the age of 16 at our clinic. Children at 16 or older will need to bring a referral letter from their GP.
