Welcome to January – a month of dieting and extreme efforts. Following a season of feasts many of us have lost our waistline and are determined to regain it as quickly as possible. Surprisingly, the best way to do that is not to loose weight in January.
There is no reason to torture yourself with excessive exercises, especially in January. You might be determined to lose weight but your body is still in a hibernation-like state. Short daylight hours and lower temperatures lower our metabolic rate, which is more conducive to gaining rather than losing weight. Of course if you exercise regularly throughout the year, you can continue with your routine; or if you took a short break, go back as soon as you are ready. But start slowly, gently building it up to your normal rate without fanaticism.
If exercising is not a part of your regular life style and suddenly seemed like a great idea on the 1 January, take it really easy or leave it till the end of January / mid-February when days are longer and hopefully warmer. Start your program slowly and don’t force yourself to do anything too hard or unpleasant. Just chose the type of exercise you can stick with and don’t quit. Once you are in better shape you will enjoy pushing yourself a little harder every now and then. But until you get there do the basic routines regularly and don’t make excuses. Sounds easy, but let’s be honest – most of us won’t see even this plan through.
December is the month when people gain the most weight. For four weeks, we enjoy continuous feasts, all the while thinking that we’ll lose it come New Year.
We make a resolution in January promising ourselves to lose that extra weight. We start exercising or go on a strict diet. In February, we realise that we are nowhere near our pre-December waistline but have already lost motivation. By March most of us simply give up. Instead, we sooth ourself with a new promise of loosing extra inches in time for the beach holiday. Does that sound familiar?
We already said a few words about exercising, and dieting at the start of a year has similar draw backs. The word “diet” means “a special course of food to which a person restricts themselves”, sometimes for medical reasons. Unfortunately, as soon as you start trying to lose weight your body clings to all your calories for dear life and won’t part with a single one without battle. The harder you try, the faster the extra pounds seem to come back after you finish the diet. Crash dieters often tend to get into a cycle of “yo-yo” dieting and eventually lose confidence in their ability to lose weight altogether.
We would like to offer you an option to lose weight differently this year. Forget the word “diet” and think “healthy eating”. We lose weight when we consume fewer calories than we burn. Exercise and dieting alter this balance only temporarily. In comparison, a change in life style will lead to a long lasting, stable improvement in your metabolism, shape and, in turn, in your overall quality of life.
The best way to start on that path is first to reduce your intake of processed foods that are all too often full of harmful additives. Instead, switch to foods that are low in fat, and high in fibre and water content. This means lower-fat dairy products, leaner meats, wholegrain breads and cereals, and plenty of fruit and veg. You do not need to buy a whole new cardboard full of healthy super foods. Just stock and diversify your favourite low calorie foods. Eating more protein will also help keep you feeling fuller for longer, helping control your appetite. However, we don’t mean protein shakes; simply adding a few nuts or some seeds to typical meals will do the trick.
Here are a few tips and recipes we use ourselves and are happy to share them with you for inspiration.

“It does definitely work but it is a commitment to the full course and you won’t see results overnight, but like many things, slowly but surely is best! If you want to invest in yourself long term I would seriously consider it as the ‘icing on the cake’ to a reasonably healthy lifestyle.
The treatment itself is pleasant and invigorating.”– Jeanette A
