Does your double chin makes your face look less slender? Did you first notice it in the mirror? Or was it a picture taken by a friend which draws your attention to the ageing face? Our weight tends to fluctuate as we age and if the rest of the face is gradually loosing volume, it seems that the fat slowly slides down under the chin accumulating there.
There are many exercises and treatments available to tighten the muscles and the skin around chin area but not much has been available to dissolve the fat in this region. The demand for a non-surgical fat dissolving treatment has been increasing within a few past years. A lot of people are concerned about their lower face full appearance and often enquire about possible correction non-surgical treatments for this area. As a result, the aesthetic industry has introduced an advanced injectable treatment to achieve reduction of the volume of fat under the chin. Permanent double chin fat reduction is an option for patients who cannot, or choose not to, have surgery.
In USA this treatment called KYBELLA® but it is not patented in UK. Although KYBELLA® delivers very good result its downtime effects can be prolonged and severe, especially swelling, facial asymmetry and numbness. In UK, there are a few fat dissolving medications available for treatment with main component – Deoxycholic acid which is used to remove excessive fat in order to reduce signs of ageing. We use cocktail of Deoxycholic acid and Arnica Montana to minimise swelling, redness and bruising. This medication has a wide safety margin and injections are less invasive and have fewer potential risks than neck liposuction or lower-face and neck surgery
Why do we have fat under the chin?
There a few causes of double chin presence: age, diet or simply a genetic predisposition to holding excess fat in the submittal region.
Both males and females are effected by the presence of a double chin. However, a non-surgical fat-reducing treatment could be more appealing to men, as the masculine beauty ideal embraces sharp angles and a defined jawline. For women, a double chin would typically be a sign of premature ageing or excess weight and correcting this feature will make them feeling happier and younger.
What is Deoxycholic asid?
Deoxycholic acid is a well-studied compound that is a synthetic version of the endogenous bile salt produced by the liver to break down dietary fat. This medication, when injected into the subcutaneous fat, destroys the cell membrane, which leads to the fat cell necrosis. However, the skin, muscle and blood vessels, remain unaffected.
After the cell membrane is destroyed, the fat is then released and metabolically wasted by the liver. The treatment is safe and permanent.
Contraindications and cautions
Patients who are knowingly pregnant or lactating cannot be treated. You won’t be able to have this treatment if you have any kind of infection or active spots at the treated area.
Full medical history will be obtained before your treatment and you must disclose if you are aiming to have surgery on your face or neck, or have any medical conditions in or near the neck, have had trouble swallowing in the past, have any bleeding problems or are taking anticoagulants.
Are there any side effects?
After the treatment some redness and swelling is to be expected for 1-4 days, which normally subsides completely in 5-7 days. Bruising and needle marks are a possible side effect, which may also last a few days. The swelling is a reflection of the body’s circulatory and lymphatic system initiating removal process of the destroyed cells. These processes induce the wound-healing quantities of the skin and will eventually help collagen induction and skin tightening.
What will happen during the treatment?
You won’t be able to have the treatment on the same day as your initial consultation. You need a cooling-off time to consider your treatment thoroughly.
On the day of the treatment you will have anaesthetic cream applied and the area marked. The injections relatively painless however, shortly after the injections, the patient will feel a burning sensation, which lasts only a few minutes. The actual treatment time is around 10 minutes.
What will I see after the treatment?
You will experience slight swelling, redness and maybe bruising.
Will I have more loose skin after the treatment?
This is most frequently asked question.
Although there is not a lot of fat accumulated under the chin, it can be heavy and so it weighs the skin down. Once that weight is removed the skin will naturally retract in a higher position.
There will be some inflammatory response of the tissue following the injections caused by swelling. This response will trigger the natural skin healing process which in turn will lead to production of fresh healthy collagen.
How many treatments do I need?
Normally, many people need just one treatment but up to 4 treatments can be performed with 6 weeks interval in-between.
Unfortunately, the signs of ageing are inevitable, no matter how well you take care of yourself. They are, however, treatable and can be improved. We can restore what the ageing process has taken away safely and efficiently.
