Perfect smile or Gummy smile…?

Perfect smile or Gummy smile…?

Do you lack confidence because of a gummy smile?

This type of condition is very common, affecting both men and women. In the past, treatment options were only offered by dentists and plastic surgeons but the treatments were painful and costly, now it can easily be corrected with botulinum toxin A injections, also known as BOTOX(®).

What is a gummy smile?
A gummy smile, also known as excessive gingival display, is a smile that shows an excessive amount of gum under the upper lip. It can be caused by a variety of genetic factors, including dental eruption, which is a process in tooth development in which the teeth enter the mouth and become visible. The upper lip elevator muscle can be blamed for showing too much gum.

People who have this condition sometimes go to extreme lengths to hide it. They will often cover their mouths when smiling or avoid smiling altogether, coming across as unhappy people. Very often they eliminate themselves from social activities due to feeling so self-conscious as a result of the condition. All of this can impact not only ones social life, but professional and personal relationships.

How do we treat a gummy smile?
At the LASERINA Clinic we treat a gummy smile by injecting botulinum toxin A injections into the upper lip elevator muscles, relaxing the muscles so that they cannot contract to a level which displays the gingival excessively.

Contrasting previous treatments, the botulinum toxin A injections are quick and easy. Although not permanent, the injections can be maintained and are a less-painful and quick alternative to surgery.

How does botulinum toxin A work?
Botulinum toxin A works by paralysing hyperactive muscles in the upper lip, reducing its activity and ultimately reducing the appearance of an excessive smile. After injections, the effect will be seen in 1-2 weeks. Usually the effects will last for 4-6 months. It is important not to undergo another treatment before the effect of the previous injections have worn off, as the body can create antibodies resisting the effect of the botulinum toxin A.

How can I get good results?
At the LASERINA Clinic, our Registered Nurse Prescriber advises that less is more. This treatment does not succeed depending upon the quantity of botulinum toxin A injected into the muscles. Instead, success is dependent upon the correct placement of the botulinum toxin A. Our Registered Nurse Prescriber has over 15 years of experience in medical aesthetics and warns clients against having too much botulinum toxin A injected. Too much botulinum toxin A can result in one not being able exercise their mouth normally and can create a ‘false’ aesthetic look.

Generally, the treatment with botulinum toxin A injections is safe when its technique and the quantity is administered at the right place and with the right amount. However, not everybody will benefit from the treatment and side effects are possible. In any case, it is the least invasive treatment comparing to surgical interventions.
